Frequently Asked Questions About Newborn Photography in Charlotte, NC

By Kate Wiggans · Kate Wiggans Photography · Charlotte, NC

If you're expecting a baby and starting to think about newborn photos, chances are you have a lot of questions — and probably not a lot of extra time or energy to go looking for answers.

I get it. Those last weeks of pregnancy are a lot. And the weeks after your baby arrives are even more so.

So I've put together answers to the questions I hear most often from Charlotte families as they start planning their newborn session. My hope is that by the time you finish reading, booking feels simple — and like one less thing on your list.

When Should I Book My Newborn Session?

The short answer: during your second trimester, ideally around 20–28 weeks.

I hold a limited number of newborn sessions each month so I can give every family the time and attention they deserve. When you book, I'll reserve a window around your due date, and once your baby arrives, we'll nail down the exact session date together.

Booking early means your spot is secured before baby gets here — which is one less thing to think about in those first overwhelming days. That said, if you're further along in your pregnancy or your baby has already arrived, please still reach out — I will always do my best to make it work.

When do newborn sessions actually take place?

Most newborn sessions happen within the first two weeks after birth.

During this window, babies tend to be sleepier and naturally curl into those sweet, tucked-in positions. That said, there's no hard deadline. My approach to newborn photography is relaxed and connection-focused, which means beautiful, meaningful images can happen whether your baby is eight days old or three weeks old.

What matters most isn't perfect timing. It's documenting your family exactly as you are in this season.

What If My Baby Is Fussy?

This is the question I hear most — and I want to put it to rest right now.

A fussy baby has never ruined a session. Not once.

Every newborn session I shoot is built around your baby's pace. We stop whenever you need to feed, change a diaper, soothe, or just take a breath. There is no schedule to keep and no expectation that your baby will cooperate on cue.

Some of my favorite images from newborn sessions are the ones where baby is wide awake, stretching, or being comforted in someone's arms. Those moments are just as beautiful — sometimes more so — than the perfectly sleepy poses.

Do I Need to Clean My House?

No. Please don't stress about this.

I typically work in just a few areas of your home — wherever the natural light is best, which is usually the nursery, primary bedroom, or living room. I'll make small adjustments as needed before I photograph anything.

The focus is never on your home. It's on your family. A little clutter in the background has never made it into one of my images.

What Should My Baby Wear?

Simple is always the right answer here.

A soft neutral onesie, a simple swaddle, or even just a diaper wrapped in a beautiful blanket photographs beautifully. I'd steer away from bright colors or busy patterns — they tend to pull the eye away from your baby's tiny features and expressions, which are really what we're there to capture.

The goal is always imagery that feels timeless — just as meaningful ten years from now as it does today.

What should the rest of the family wear?

Soft, comfortable, and coordinated.

For parents and siblings, I recommend neutral tones —

  • cream

  • ivory

  • soft taupe

  • muted blues

  • warm neutrals

These photograph beautifully against the natural light in your home and create a cohesive look throughout your gallery without feeling too matchy.

Comfort matters a lot here. You'll be on the floor, leaning over a bassinet, sitting in bed — whatever feels most natural for your family. Wear something you'd actually be comfortable moving around in.

As part of your experience, you also have complimentary access to my Client Closet, which includes a selection of dresses and pieces chosen specifically for newborn sessions. I'll send you the full lookbook after booking so you can browse and choose your favorites before the session.

How Long Does a Newborn Session Last?

Most in-home newborn sessions run between one and two hours.

That might sound like a lot, but it goes quickly — and having that time built in means we're never rushing. We have space for feeding breaks, outfit changes, family groupings, and all the little in-between moments that end up being the most meaningful.

Everything moves at your baby's pace. Always.

What Should I Have Ready?

Very little, honestly.

Have the basics nearby:

  • diapers

  • wipes

  • feeding supplies

  • a favorite swaddle if you have one

Beyond that, I encourage families to simply focus on being present.

You don't need props. You don't need a styled nursery. You just need to show up as your family, and I'll take care of the rest.

What If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

Completely expected — and already accounted for.

When you book, I build flexibility into the schedule around your due date. Once your baby arrives, you reach out and we find the best date based on how everyone is feeling. There's no scrambling and no pressure. The process is designed to flex around real life, because that's exactly what early parenthood requires.

Can partners and siblings be included?

Absolutely — and I'd encourage it.

Some of my favorite images from every newborn session are the ones with the whole family in the frame. The way a sibling reaches for a tiny hand. The way a father looks at his baby for the first time outside the hospital. The way a new mother holds her baby like she's been waiting her whole life for this exact moment.

Those are often the photographs families treasure most, years down the road.

How Long Does It Take to Receive Our Gallery?

Your gallery will be carefully hand-edited and delivered through a private online gallery within 2–3 weeks of your session. You'll be able to view, download, and order prints directly from the gallery.

I'll share full details about delivery timing before your session so you know exactly what to expect..

What Makes Lifestyle Newborn Photography Different?

Lifestyle newborn photography is less about elaborate props and perfectly posed sleeping babies, and more about documenting the real moments — the connection, the emotion, the tiny details that make this season of life so fleeting and so significant.

The result is a gallery that feels natural and genuinely yours. Not staged. Not generic. Just your family, in your home, in one of the most meaningful chapters of your lives.
