Frequently Asked Questions About Newborn Photography in Charlotte, NC

If you're expecting a baby and beginning your search for a Charlotte newborn photographer, you may be wondering what a newborn session is actually like—and whether you need to have everything perfectly figured out before your baby arrives.

The good news? You don't.

Those early weeks with a newborn are beautiful, emotional, and often a little overwhelming. My goal is to make the photography experience feel simple, relaxed, and one less thing for you to worry about.

Below are some of the most common questions I receive from Charlotte families as they prepare for their newborn session.

When Should I Book My Newborn Session?

The best time to reserve your newborn session is during your second trimester.

Most newborn photographers in Charlotte take a limited number of newborn sessions each month so there's flexibility around due dates and arrival times.

When you book, I'll reserve space around your due date and we'll finalize the exact session date once your baby arrives.

Booking during pregnancy helps ensure availability and gives us plenty of time to plan your experience.

When Are Newborn Photos Taken?

Most newborn sessions take place within the first two to three weeks after birth.

During this season, babies are often sleepier and naturally curl into those sweet newborn positions we all love.

That said, there is no magic deadline.

My approach to newborn photography is lifestyle-focused and connection-centered, which means beautiful images can be created whether your baby is ten days old or several weeks old.

The most important thing is documenting your family exactly as you are in this season.

What If My Baby Is Fussy?

This is probably the question I hear most often.

And truly—you don't need to worry.

Newborn sessions are intentionally relaxed and baby-led.

We pause whenever needed for:

  • feeding

  • diaper changes

  • soothing

  • cuddles

There is never any expectation that your baby will sleep through the entire session.

Some of the most meaningful photographs happen when your baby is awake, stretching, yawning, or simply being held and comforted by you.

Do I Need to Clean My House?

Not at all.

One of the biggest misconceptions about in-home newborn photography is that your home needs to look perfect.

It doesn't.

I typically use just a few areas of your home with the best natural light—often the nursery, primary bedroom, or living room.

If needed, I'll gently move a few small items before photographing.

The focus is never on having a magazine-worthy home.

The focus is on your family.

What Should My Baby Wear?

Simple is always best.

A neutral onesie, soft swaddle, or even a simple diaper wrapped in a beautiful blanket photographs beautifully.

I generally recommend avoiding bright colors, busy patterns, or anything that distracts from your baby's tiny features and expressions.

The goal is timeless imagery that feels just as beautiful years from now as it does today.

What Should Parents and Siblings Wear?

Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully and help create a cohesive look throughout your gallery.

I recommend choosing comfortable pieces in colors such as:

  • cream

  • ivory

  • soft taupe

  • muted blues

  • warm neutrals

As part of your experience, I provide styling guidance and access to my curated client closet to help make wardrobe planning feel effortless.

You don't have to figure it all out on your own.

How Long Does a Newborn Session Last?

Most newborn sessions last between one and two hours.

This gives us plenty of time for feeding breaks, outfit changes, and capturing a variety of images without ever feeling rushed.

Everything moves at your baby's pace.

What Should I Have Ready?

Very little, honestly.

Have the basics nearby:

  • diapers

  • wipes

  • feeding supplies

  • a favorite swaddle if you have one

Beyond that, I encourage families to simply focus on being present.

You don't need to prepare elaborate props or create a picture-perfect environment.

What If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

This is completely expected.

When you book your newborn session, I reserve time around your due date.

Once your baby arrives, you'll simply let me know and we'll choose the best date for your session.

Flexibility is built into the process from the beginning.

Can Parents and Siblings Be Included?

Absolutely.

In fact, some of my favorite images from every newborn session are the ones that include the whole family.

The way a sibling gently reaches for a tiny hand.

The way a father looks at his new baby.

The way a mother holds the newest member of her family.

Those are often the photographs families treasure most.

How Long Does It Take to Receive Our Gallery?

Your gallery will be carefully edited and delivered through an online gallery where you can view, download, and order prints.

You'll receive all of the details regarding delivery timelines before your session so you know exactly what to expect.

What Makes Lifestyle Newborn Photography Different?

Rather than focusing on elaborate props or heavily posed images, lifestyle newborn photography centers on connection.

It's about documenting the tiny details, the emotions, and the relationships that make this season so meaningful.

The result is a gallery that feels natural, timeless, and uniquely yours.
